Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Sports Betting Picks: Winning Strategies You Can Take To The Bank

In the world sports betting picks, there are obviously no guarantees. However, there are certainly strategies that can help you move the odds in your favor. In addition to subscribing to sports betting picks from winning professionals, these are a few of the strategies that pros use to guarantee they always come out ahead. Look into the possibilities and see if you can apply at least one to your betting strategies for the 2013-2014 NFL season or your NCAA picks for the current season.Arbitrage BettingArbitrage betting is seen by some gamblers as a no-lose strategy for sports betting picks. Professional betters – including those who make their living betting on the rise and fall of stocks on the New York Stock Exchange – use arbitrage extensively. They call it “offsetting risk.” You probably know it as “hedging your bets.” Essentially, arbitrage betting means placing opposing bets so that no matter which way a game goes, you’ll win one of your bets. There’s one caveat, though. The trick in arbitrage betting is to make sure that your winnings on either bet will be greater than your loss on the other. In order to do that, research the best odds at the various sportsbooks. The truth is, bookmakers are constantly adjusting their betting lines as new information comes in. Part of the information used by each bookmaker is how many bets are being placed for or against a particular position, and that information can be substantially different from one bookmaker to the next. Shop around to find exploitable arbitrage positions for every game in the 2013-2014 NFL season. And of course, you can save yourself a lot of time and research energy by subscribing to a service that shares pro football picks for each game – including which books are offering the best odds on each position.Value BettingIf you pay attention to the game and the odds, value betting can bring you a consistent return on your money for sports betting picks. This strategy only works if you know enough to spot when a sportsbook has set the odds too high for a particular game or outcome. For example, the books may have an NCAA game at 5 to 1 odds for the favorite, but you believe that the underdogs actually have a one in three chance of winning the game, or at the very least, of beating the spread. A bet on the underdog in that situation will offer a substantially better return and is worth the chance. Of course, the opposite also holds true: you should also recognize poor value bets and avoid them like poison.Flat Betting SystemFlat betting is simple. It’s exactly what it sounds like. You figure out how much your bank is for the 2013-2014 NFL season or the NCAA college football season and divide it by the number of games on which you plan to bet to get the amount you’ll wager on each game. You’ll wager the same set amount for each game whether you win or lose. If you win more than you lose, you’ll come out ahead. There’s no real secret to winning with a flat betting system, but it’s easier said than done. You need to make great choices on your sports betting picks. There are a couple of different ways to do that, either on their own or in combination. You can either choose the bets that will pay off with the highest profits, in which case, you could conceivably come out ahead even if you lose more bets than you win. The other is to choose more winners than losers. In fact, according to most betting experts, you only have to bet right 52.3 percent of the time to come out ahead with a flat betting system.Your best ally for the 2013-2014 NFL and NCAA football season is a reliable source of winning sports betting picks. Do your research to find a pro who consistently gives great tips and combine the advice you get with your own knowledge and your system to pocket some extra change this year.

Sunday, October 16, 2005

The 4th National Museum of Japan opened on Saturday in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, the northern part of Kyushu island. The new museum was named Kyushu National Museum, and nicknamed “Kyuhaku”. It is the first national museum in Kyushu, including national art museums and thematic museums. After the opening ceremony with around 800 invited guests on last Saturday, Kyushu National Museum began to accept visitors starting on Sunday.

Different from its three sister museums which are over 100 years old and interested mainly in fine-arts, the new museum focuses on history. It also has an ambition to display how Japanese culture has developed from the prehistoric period to the mid 19th century with its collection of some 920 items including three national treasures. Its mission statement says the museum show how the Japanese culture has developed from the view of Asian history studies. Cultural interaction between other Asian countries is also a part of its mission, locating near to Korea or China.

Dazaifu, Fukuoka is a historic site in Japan and that was a part of reasons why it received the honor of hosting the new museum, the focus of which will be on history. Since the 7th century the extension of central government, Dazaifu was situated there from which the name of modern city derives. It was the military and administrative center of the government as well as the diplomatic center of Japan which hosted East Asian guests who visited Japan. Later the Mongol and Korean allies attempted to invade Japan in the 14th century, Dazaifu became one of fierce battlefields. Also Dazaifu is known its religious significance with Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine, one of famous cults in Shintoism which worships Sugawara no Michizane, the kami of scholars and studies. In addition to those tourist interests, the new museum is expected to stimulate tourists in much wider generations and interests.

Kyushu National Museum holds a special exhibition celebrating its opening from its public opening day till November 27. During this exhibition it will open everyday, though normally on Monday it will close.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.

Aerial collision over Austria kills 8

Monday, March 5, 2007

An aerial collision near Zell am See, Austria has killed 8 people, 5 Swiss citizens, 1 French, 1 German and 1 Austrian.

The collision occurred Monday afternoon between a Super Puma helicopter belonging to Helog S.A, based in Küssnacht (Switzerland), and a private Diamond DA20 “Katana” light aircraft which had taken off from the aerodrome at Zell am See.

All 7 of the passengers and crew from the helicopter were pronounced dead at the scene, as was the pilot of the light aircraft, which had no passengers on board.

The debris from the accident spread over a 20 metre radius and bystanders near to the incident reported seeing a “huge ball of fire in the sky”.

The reason for the accident is presently unclear as both craft have been confirmed as passing pre-flight testing at their respective take-off locations. Furthermore, Zell am See tower radioed the helicopter that a plane was taking off, to which the helicopter replied positively. This conversation should have been heard over radio by the pilot of the plane.

The site of the accident is now being guarded by police, pending the arrival of an investigation team and a delegate of the state attorney.

Cargo Van Or Pickup; Which Work Truck Is The Right One?

byAlma Abell

If you are faced with buying a new or used truck you will be faced with deciding which is most suitable; a cargo van or a pickup truck. On the surface these two types of Ford trucks in Chicago look very different; a typical pickup has an open bed and some models are designed to go off-road while a cargo van is fully enclosed and is designed to drive on streets. These two different types of trucks do have certain similarities though, they both can tow a heavy trailer and they have loads of room for equipment. Which is the vehicle that is actually best suited for what it is you do?

The benefits of pickup trucks:

If ease of use is important to you then a pickup is the better choice. With open sides it is far easier to load and unload equipment and material that is needed on a job site. With a cargo van it is necessary to climb in, grab the material and pull it out through the rear doors.

Gas mileage is also better, midsize Ford trucks in Chicago are simply more efficient and getter better fuel economy because they are lighter than cargo vans.

The benefits of cargo vans:

The big plus for cargo vans is the fact that they are fully enclosed. An enclosed van deters thieves and protects your equipment and material in the event of inclement weather.

A cargo van lends itself to organization. There is little you can do with a pickup other than just load everything into the bed, a cargo van is ideal for those that carry spare parts for on-site repairs. Plumbers, appliance repair technicians and the like appreciate the fact that all the parts that they commonly use can be kept on board in drawers or on shelves.

In the end, there are Ford trucks in Chicago that meet the specific needs of everyone regardless of whether you plan on hauling material or people or both.

If you are looking for new or used Ford trucks in Chicago you will find exactly what you want when you visit the new vehicle showroom or used truck lot of Hawk Ford Oak Lawn. To know more information visit http://www.hawkford.com/.

Wikinews’ overview of the year 2007

Monday, December 31, 2007

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Hackers crack Sony PSP to allow Internet chat, web surfing

Thursday, April 7, 2005

Sony’s recently introduced Playstation Portable has proved popular with curious geeks who discovered various talents hidden within the new handheld video console.

The biggest ‘hack’ so far has been the manipulation of a web browser embedded within the PSP game ‘Wipeout Pure’, which can be easily coaxed into accessing the majority of Internet via a suitable portal. Jonathan Terleski was able to monitor the digital conversation held between his PSP and Sony’s website when the browser in his game ‘Wipeout Pure’ would try to download new software from Sony via the Internet. Using a suitably set up DNS server, Terleski configured his handheld console to access his own custom PSP portal, instead of Sony’s website, and then invited other owners to use his gateway to the web. [1]

From this discovery, Robert Balousek later created a web based IRC interface that allows people to talk to each other and hold conversations in real time via the Internet on their PSP consoles. According to Reuters, his IRC website has to date been used by as many as 100,000 visitors and Balousek now plans to introduce a web based interface to the AOL instant messaging network for PSP users.

Other notable recent ‘hacks’ include reading ebooks and comics and watching pre-recorded television shows, taken from a TiVo, on the Sony PSP.

None of the ‘hacks’ have yet employed writing custom software for the device. So far, most are spin-offs of Jonathon Terleski’s web browser hack. Other hacks, like the ebook reader and television show viewer, are made possible through use of the PSP’s built in tools for viewing video and images. Sony has not yet released an SDK which would allow end-users to write ‘homebrew’ software, therefore hackers are tied to manipulating software included with the PSP or available through the games purchased separately.

Speaking to Wikinews, Jacob Metcalf, who documented the web comic’s hack on his website, explained his motivation: “Web comics are already designed for on-screen reading and they have some of the same audience as people who play games – lots of the most popular web comics are about gamers, like PVP and Penny Arcade.”

He added: “I do wish that [Sony] would come out with an actual web browser like the Dreamcast had. South Korea is going to get a real web browser and I have a feeling in my gut that there is going to be Internet software for the PSP like a web browser and email announced at E3 this year.”

Casey Key A Private Island Paradise On Florida’s Gulf Coast

By John Allen

Casey Key is an 8 mile barrier island located about 25 minutes south of downtown Sarasota, FL. The island stretches from Sarasota Bay to the beautiful azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico and is only 300 yards wide in some spots. Casey Key provides the ultimate environment for those seeking relaxation, beauty, luxury and privacy.

Casey Key is accessible by two bridges. The north bridge is one the oldest swinging drawbridges in the United States. There’s is often a short wait as the bridge swings open to let fishing boats, yachts and sailboats pass.

On the West side of Casey Key are the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico and on the East side of the Key is Little Sarasota Bay. In 1849, the island was called Chaise’s Key and was later renamed Casey Key in 1856. During Florida’s land boom of the 1920s, Casey Key was called Treasure Island for a short time.

Real Estate

Casey Key offers a wide range of real estate options, from simple to extravagant. There is a mix of estate homes, small Florida bungalows, beach cottages, and even cabanas. However, there are no condominiums or high-rises on the island. Unlike other barrier islands, Casey Key is comprised almost entirely of single family homes.

Casey Key homes are located on either side of Casey Key Road, the islands main drag. Waterfront options include direct Gulf-front, bayfront and sprawling Gulf to Bay estates. Home prices on Casey Key start at over one million.

In peak season, tourists often travel to the Casey Key area just to view the impressive walled estates. Many of the estate homes are behind scrolled wrought iron gates. Palm trees, hibiscus, magnolias, oaks trees draped with Spanish moss are abundant and complete this island’s tropical charm. The beaches and Gulf sunsets are spectacular here!

Activities

There is almost no public beach access on Casey Key. At the South end of Casey Key, visitors congregate at the Jetties to gain access to the public beach area. You can grab a hotdog, have a picnic, walk out to the beach and collect a few sharks’ teeth or relax take in the Florida sights.

Restaurants such as Casey Key Fish House are popular hangouts for the locals on Casey Key and can be reached by car or boat. Doggies are welcome at Casey Key Fish House on the outside deck and often an egret will stop by for a visit at your table. Diners enjoy groupers sandwiches and calamari while watching boats docking at the marina. A variety of Mainland restaurants and shopping are only a short drive away.

A Private Lifestyle

Following other authors who were mesmerized by the tranquil and private lifestyle of some of South Florida’s prime real estate, Stephen King was drawn to Casey Key, Florida. King purchased a homestead on the north end of the island about 10 years ago. The ultra wealthy and famous residents favor Casey Key because of it’s the seclusion and privacy. Casey Key is truly a tropical paradise for the rich and famous.

If you’re planning to visit Casey Key, there are a few small motel/hotels on the Key or by contacting a rental company; you can schedule an extended vacation in one of Casey Key’s beach cottages. Casey Key has little traffic, no traffic lights at all, but watch out of the walkers and bikers!

For those who can afford to live on Casey Key, the private atmosphere of this barrier island is unmatched. The small number of residents, private beaches and seclusion make Casey Key Florida a true island paradise.
