University study finds U.S. defense contract information in ‘electronic waste’ in Africa

Friday, June 26, 2009

According to a documentary about journalism students at the University of British Columbia tracking electronic waste (e-waste), details of United States defense contracts and confidential military data were left on a donated hard drive which was purchased for US$35 in Ghana.

The purchased hard drive was a donation by Northrop Grumman Corporation, an American aerospace and defense technology company.

The PBS investigative documentary, Ghana: Digital Dumping Ground, tracked what happened to donated or discarded electronics. The journalism students randomly purchased seven hard drives in Tema, Africa. “We plugged them and in and started reading files … They were just sitting there,” said Klein.

As part of the international reporting course the students then submitted the hard drives to Enoch Kwesi Messiah, a computer scientist at Regent University to see if any of the previous owners had erased the data on their hard drives before disposal.

Messiah stated, “I can get your bank numbers and I retrieve all your money from your accounts. If ever somebody gets your hard drive, he can get every information about you from the drive, no matter where it is hidden.”

The graduate journalism students under Professor Peter Klein travelled to the Korle Lagoon in Accra the capital of Ghana. Beside the polluted waters is Agbogbloshie, the largest collection of e-waste, useless electronic donations.

“Life is really difficult; they eat here, surrounded by e-waste,” said Mike Anane, a local journalist, “They basically are here to earn a living. But you can imagine the health implications.” The e-waste is burned and rendered down for copper, iron, or gold from the components.

“It’s essentially this charred toxic wasteland,” said Blake Sifton, one of the students. “It’s incredibly difficult to breathe because there’s usually between five and six and seven fires going at any time .… and there’s tons and tons of this black, sticky, acrid smoke coming out of them.”

Strollers And Buggies For Your Day Care Center, To Sooth Those Fussy Babies And Toddlers

By Kris Starliper

A well stocked day care will also include strollers as well as furniture, toys and outside equipment. Being that small children are involved, there are more things to take into consideration that how they look. There are a few things to take into consideration when purchasing strollers for your day care center.

Safety is your first concern, make certain that you review all of the strollers in which you are considering to ensure that there are no recalls and or safety concerns for those particular strollers. Considering the high level of use of the strollers it is wise to select an industrial stroller. They do make some that are designed specifically for day care centers. Another plus of the industry strollers is that they often come to where they can seat anywhere from two to eight children.

A highly recommended stroller that you may look into is the Runabout, the runabout is a very industrial stroller, high on safety, and has tires that can not be punctured. Runabouts come in single to six-seats and are easy to manipulate, even on rough paths. Runabout strollers are highly recommended by parents of multiples, and are made to order. The Company that produces them has a high quality standard and great reputation.

Accessories for your strollers are very important. You will want to ensure that your strollers are equipped with a five point harness system to ensure safety, as well as sun shades to prevent the children from getting sunburned. Baskets come in handy to store sippy cups, bottles and or toys for the children. Other options for strollers would include rain guards and nets to prevent bugs from getting on the children. It will also be necessary for you to purchase strollers specifically designed for younger children, infants.

A highly recommend option is the Triple-Decker, as you can have three children in it at the same time, the triple-decker requires that you use an infant car seat for the children. You can also get the triple-decker in single and twin models. The triple-decker is easy to use and has an excellent reputation in the industry. It is also important that you have single strollers on hand, there may be times in which one child needs to be walked, yet you do not want to disrupt the schedules of the rest of the children in the room. In this situation there would be no need to pull out the bigger strollers.

A central place for storing your strollers is ideal as well. You will want to keep them in good working condition and keep them out of the elements. It may be necessary to build a storage building for them, or closet. Your strollers should be easily assessable to all who would need to use them at all times.

Strollers and buggies are a necessity in any day care setting that caters to children from the infant age up to two and yes even three years of age. So make sure you do your homework and study the options available before purchasing.

Israeli PM Ariel Sharon briefly opens eyes

Monday, January 16, 2006

Israeli media is reporting that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon opened his eyes for the first time since he suffered a major stroke on January 4, 2006.

However, hospital officials said the reports were generated by the Sharon family’s “impression of eyelid movement, whose medical significance is unclear.”

“He was listening to a tape of his grandson and you could see tears in his eyes for a matter of seconds before he closed them again,” a doctor treating Sharon told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.

Army Radio, citing unidentified close associates of Sharon, say the Prime Minister could “recognize people around him.”

However, hospital officials state that it is “too early to tell whether the development represented a significant improvement or was just a temporary reflex.”

Sharon had undergone a tracheotomy on Sunday to help with his breathing and to help prevent infection from his respirator tube.

1000 homes evacuated in Plymouth, England, after bomb find

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

The discovery of an old World War II bomb in a construction site has caused at least 1000 residents in Plymouth located in South-West England, to be evacuated.

“Evacuations are being carried out of properties within 100m [328ft] of the scene. Properties within the 100m-300m [328-984ft] zone are being advised to open windows and draw curtains,” said a spokesman for the police department in Plymouth.

Workers on the site discovered the bomb at about 10:30 a.m. local time in Plymouth, England on Brentor Road.

Reports say that the bomb is sticking out of the ground by about 6 inches, and weighed an estimated 113 kilograms, or 250 pounds, but could have weighed as much as 500 pounds.

“The item was protruding about six inches from the ground and was described as being up to 10-inches in diameter,” said a spokesman for the Devon and Cornwall Police.

The Army bomb disposal team from Wales is currently trying to figure out what to do with the bomb and it could take several hours before authorities can dispose of it. Reports say that the bomb will be taken to the ocean to be detonated.

“The precise nature of this operation and any potential route are yet to be confirmed,” added the spokesman.

Two unconscious drug-overdosed men discovered outside University of Canberra residence hall

Friday, April 12, 2013

Yesterday morning in the Australian Capital Territory, two unconscious men were discovered outside the University of Canberra’s New Ressies.

Police said both men were in critical condition after being transported to nearby Calvary Hospital. According to the University of Canberra and Campus Living Services, who operate the university’s residence halls, neither man attended the university. Detective Sergeant John Giles from ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations said the police believe both men overdosed on a synthetic ketamine product, which they likely consumed believing it was ecstasy. According to Giles, ecstasy is commonly used at nightclubs in Canberra.

Emergency services were first called to the scene at 11:00am Canberra time; officials were on site for at least another hour and a half. ACT Policing secured the area while AFP Forensics investigated. At this stage, the Australian Federal Police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident follows a fire alarm going off at 3:20am Canberra time, and going off again around 7:20am. Fire alarm testing has been scheduled for today.

Western Australia apologises to abused wards-of-state

April 7, 2005

The state Premier of Western Australia (WA), Dr Geoff Gallop, gave an apology to children physically and sexually abused in institutional care within the state between the 1920s and 1970s. The statement was given in reaction to an Australian Senate inquiry into institutional child abuse published last year.

“We acknowledge our state’s history, the role played by the state in providing care for children and particularly past practices in the provision of care,” Dr Gallop told Australian Associated Press.

“We apologise to all those people who were harmed as children while in institutional care, and express deep regret at the hurt and distress caused. We recognise that the effects of physical, psychological and sexual abuse did not end when these children became adults.”

Many of the children had been placed in care by government agencies.

“Overwhelmingly, the (submissions) make tragic and distressing reading. They tell of neglect, of shocking abuse, of predatory behaviour from so-called carers and of criminal activity,” Senator McLucas told federal parliament at the time of the Forgotten Australians report, last year.

“The evidence is also there that authorities in the church and in governments either knew or should have known that much of this horrific activity was occurring.”

The inquiry found that an apology was an important symbolism in recognising past wrongs and helping victims gain closure, according to an ABC News report. And Dr Gallop said the victims’ personal histories must be heard and acknowledged in order to build a better care system for the future.

WA’s Community Development Minister, Sheila McHale, said those wishing to find out about their time in care in WA as children should contact the Department for Community Development, which is also providing counselling services to those who were abused in an institution.
