Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

The Peak Bicep Extreme Arm Workout

By Michael Tottman

When your looking to make your Arms into the very best that they can be, improving your Peak Bicep muscle is one of the real Underground Bodybuilding Secrets that adds the finishing touch to an already impressive physique!

It is a mad freaky muscle, and is sure to get people talking whether in a Bodybuilding posing lineup or even if your just on your day to day business. The majority of aspiring Bodybuilders never manage to create anything like the Peak Bicep of which they are capable. Today, that is all about to change as this article will specifically detail the exact exercises you need to implement in order to start growing a serious Bicep Peak, or Bicep outer head as it is called within sport science.

It would be wrong of me though to suggest that Genetics didnt count towards your overall potential to grow a Peak Bicep muscle. Nonetheless, everyone can implement these exercises to maximize muscle stimulation of your Bicep Outer Head, building that desirable Bicep-on-top-of-a-Bicep look that is so darn impressive.

The first thing you need to do is take a self critical look at your own Bicep.

You do this correctly by placing your hand straight onto your nearest wall then turn to the side in a similar way to a Chest Stretch. Then keeping your body turned, take a look at your Bicep. If you are of proportionally low bodyfat you will see a split in your Bicep, just lower than the place where it meets your Deltiods. To build an impressive Peak Bicep we are going to be shifting our attention onto the outer most muscle here – the outer head.

Peak Bicep Exercise 1: ‘Debilitating’ Dumbbell Hammer Curls

The safest and most effective way of performing this exercise is to position the weights with your palms facing inwards towards themselves (in the same way you might hold a Cars steering wheel) whilst ensuring you keep your elbows tucked in to the sides of your body.

Ensure you have warmed up adequately with a high volume set at a light weight then prepare for actions stations utilizing the heaviest poundage possible to you.

10,8,6 x heaviest weight possible

Exercise 2: ‘Extreme’ Ez Bar Curls

This is my single favorite exercise in which to shift your full focus at the top and feel that muscle contraction with.

The two key aspects to focus on with this movement are to stand with your back against a wall – for the reason that this prevents you from swinging the weight unnaturally and to grip the bar with your hands very close together. You may witness an Ego death at this point as you will find that you are unable to lift anything remotely near to your usual max, but that is par for the course. Keep building up strength and you will quickly experience quite dramatic Peak Bicep increases.

12,10,8 x heaviest weight possible

Exercise 3: ‘Vein Popping’ One-Arm Cable Curls

Be sure to complete your workout with this exercise when the muscle is near totally exhausted. Cable exercises should performed at a light weight. Use a weight that you can quite easily lift for 3 sets of 10 with. The reasoning here is to attack the fast twitch fibers and gorge the Bicep with nutrient filled blood. As well as building fantastic peak bicep definition this exercise will also leave your Biceps feeling pumped to the point of bursting!

20,15,10 x medium weight

Explicit Canadian workplace safety ads pulled from TV due to Christmas season

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Controversial and explicit Canadian workplace safety ads have been pulled from television, and paper ads from some bus shelters for the Christmas season. However, the ads will return to air in January.

“It’s totally erroneous to suggest we’re pulling anything,” chairman of the Workplace Safety and Information Board of Ontario, Steve Mahoney said. “Our plan from Day 1 was to stop the ads around the middle of December when most of the advertising that’s in the media is focused on Christmas and purchasing gifts. We just didn’t want to be competing with all that stuff.”

In one of the TV ads a woman accidentally slips on grease on the floor and a large steaming pot falls onto her face, and she starts screaming to death. The ads end with the message “There really are no accidents”.

A paper ads shows a construction worker who is in a pool of blood with a forklift operation manual stuck in his chest. Another with a man who is slit by a “Danger” sign with his leg stuck in a machine. They show the messages: “Lack of training can kill” and the other “Ignoring safety procedures can kill”.

“The critics amount to about 25 per cent rating, and I’m delighted they’re upset about the ads because I wouldn’t want anyone to enjoy watching them.”

The videos have been viewed more than 70,000 times on the Board’s website and are gaining large amounts of views on YouTube.

The transit authorities of Hamilton and Mississauga will show modified advertisements. The transit authority of Guelph will show the ads in bus shelters, but the transit authority of Windsor will not because of the graphic nature.

“We’re not against workplace safety, but this is too graphic,” said Caroline Postma, chair of the Transit Windsor board.

Mississauga city councillour Carolyn Parrish said: “My son-in-law was telling me that they shouldn’t be on in prime time because when [my grandson] watches them he just about bursts into tear. Now he follows his mom around the kitchen to make sure she doesn’t spill grease. And he’s only four. There’s too much of a chance that … people are really badly affected by it, and can’t really do anything about it anyway.” She suggested the ads only be aired to workers with the jobs shown in the commercials.

Mahoney changed the earlier promise to air the ads only after 8:00pm to after 9:00pm at last nights meeting with Mississauga city council.

Mahoney said the commercials and paper ads are not “too graphic at all”. And they are “absolutely appropriate and they’re doing what they’re intended to do, they’re creating what I call a water cooler topic of conversation.”

Ninety-eight Canadian workers so far have been killed on the job this year.

Australian TV network sprung fabricating live crosses by rival

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Australia’s Nine Network has issued an apology after the rival Seven Network caught Nine News fabricating live crosses to the search site for murdered schoolboy Daniel Morcombe. The network issued a statement after Saturday and Sunday’s Nine News bulletins in Brisbane, which featured presenter Eva Milic crossing “live” to the site with the caption: “Near Beerwah”.

The rival Seven Network, based nearby, lifted the lid on the scam after filming the Nine News chopper almost 100 kilometres south of Beerwah – on the helipad outside the studio, with lights on and blades in motion while Cameron Price reported from inside. Nine admitted to faking Sunday’s cross; issuing a statement on Monday blaming bad weather.

“Our chopper was forced to divert from Beerwah due to bad weather, and air control instructed them to touch down,” it read.

The network also told media industry website mUmBRELLA that “the producer was unaware until it was too late to abort or delay the cross”.

Doubts have been cast over the truth of this statement, however, as it has since emerged that the chopper was also absent from Beerwah on Saturday, and was in fact circling Brisbane’s western suburbs during Melissa Mallet’s report. Director of Queensland Seven News, Rob Raschke, questioned the merit of Nine’s claims, telling Brisbane’s Courier-Mail, “the idea of not knowing where a $3 million helicopter is defies belief”.

A revised statement yesterday announced a Nine investigation into why the location of the helicopter was misreported on both nights, describing the situation as “unacceptable”.

Botox And Dermal Fillers: The Non Surgical Nose Job

By Abigail Aaronson

Very few people have what experts qualify as a “perfect nose”. Perhaps it is crooked, bumpy, or maybe their bridge seems too low or wide, whatever the imperfection, most people are very aware of their nasal flaws.

But while most people aren’t satisfied with their schnozzles, they are many that are not ready or willing to undergo rhinoplasty, a major and permanent, not to mention expensive, surgery used to correct nasal imperfections. But there is hope for those people with minor flaws. Their imperfections can be addressed with injectables like Botox and dermal fillers.

Injectables can’t solve everything but there are many cases in which dermal fillers and Botox can serve as an alternative to rhinoplasty. Some of these cases include concerns such as an over prominent tip, a low and wide bridge, a ski-slope, as well as a bumpy one. In all these situations, the nose must not be too large, because injectables will correct and smooth out but only by adding additional volume.

An over prominent nasal tip looks like it sits too high or sticks out too far making it the center of attention. This can be corrected by Botox injections. Botox will reduce the muscle pull on the tip allowing it to drop and become less noticeable. These results will last up to four months.

Many African-Americans and people of Asian descent are born with low and wide bridges. Low, wide bridges may also be the result of a poorly done rhinoplasty. From the front a low bridge makes the eyes appear to be set too far apart. It also may make it look out of proportion with the rest of the face, appearing too short or bottom heavy.

From the side the bridge seems to sit too close to the face. In all cases of low and wide bridges, attention is drawn away from the eyes and toward the nose. Fortunately, injectables can fix this concern. A plastic surgeon or qualified technician can inject dermal filler along the length of the nose to make it appear higher. The results will last from one to two years.

A ski-slope type is the combination of both a low bridge and an over prominent up-turned tip. This case looks just like its name: a ski slope. It occurs both naturally and as a result of a poorly performed rhinoplasty. Dermal fillers can be injected to fill in the depressed parts of the nose for less of a scoop. The longevity of the results depends upon which fillers are used.

Many people have a bumpy nose which means that their noses lack smooth transitions from one part to another. One part of the bridge will be higher than the rest because of uneven amounts of cartilage. A bumpy nose can be fixed by using dermal fillers to fill in the depressions surrounding the bump.

Basically, a smoother nose is made by adding more volume to the rest of the part. Again, the length of the results depends on the specific fillers used. Botox and dermal fillers can be used to fix naturally occurring nose imperfections as well as mistakes resulting from a previous rhinoplasty.

Injectables can also be used during the healing period following a rhinoplasty, as it may not take its correct and final shape for up to a year following the surgery. Using Botox and dermal fillers is not a permanent solution to correcting nose problems and treatments must repeated after a few months or every couple of years depending on the injectables used.

If a person seeks a permanent solution but is unsure of what they would look like, using injectables once or twice may act as a trial run for rhinoplasty. In all cases, patients ought to counsel with an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon before making any decisions.

Understanding Labrador Retrievers Why A Lab May Not Be For You

By Kelly Marshall

Labrador Retrievers are considered people-oriented animals. So, they have to be in tune with their owners in order to follow certain guidelines. In order to understand this, you have to look deeper at what Labs were bred to do, and that is to hunt and retrieve.

You have to think of it this way; these dogs must be in perfect harmony with their hunter/owner in order to follow specific directions to track and find birds that have fallen to the ground. This need for the dog to have hand-held direction links to all aspects of a Labrador’s lifeeven in your home.

This is great for those who want constant canine companionship. Nevertheless, it is bad for dog owners who have a Labrador Retriever but expect their pet to entertain itself with little contact from the owner.

There are many hunting dogs that were bred to be independent hunters with little contact and instruction from people. Examples of these types of dogs are Terriers and Hounds, which are known to lead the way (by smell and sight) with the human hunter determined to keep up with their companions pace.

This is not how the Labrador is built. Labs are designed to retrieve, and in doing so they must have a connected attention link directly to the hunter. If a retriever ignores the hunter’s commands then they may hit the water and swim far past where the bird has fallen, and possibly keep swimming out and away.

Retrievers that are well trained do not make these types of errors because they have the natural ability to attend to and follow thorough directions from the hunter. This skill is very critical to being a trustworthy retriever and is one of the reasons that these dogs make great service animals and obedience trainees.

Reason Why Some Labs Do Not Do Well With Many Families

You can probably understand by now just how connected and dependent a Labrador Retriever becomes to its owners. Retrievers always looks to people for leadership and must have human contact.

Its important to know that every dog breed is sociable to some extent. Some are even more sociable than others, but Labs need a whole log more attention than most dogs. They do not do very well when left alone for prolonged periods of time. A busy family who is away all day and come home to find out that their Lab has destroyed their new window trying to escape does not understand why this is happening.

These people are understandably livid and then chastise their Labs. An educated Lab owner will not act this way because they know better. They know what causes a Lab to try to escape like this and just wants to search out and find its owners. The dog is only considering their pack missing and make an attempt to find them outside.

One big lesson to take away from this article, especially if you have not yet decided on what type of dog to own and are thinking about getting a Labrador Retriever, is to make sure that you have plenty of time to devote to your Lab, day and night. If not, then consider a more independent dog breed. Otherwise, your lovable Lab may soon become increasingly unhappy and will end up a very destructive house pet, or worse, a runaway.
