Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Short Term Working Capital Financing

Short Term Working Capital Financing

by

Allan Michael Taylor

Short-term small business financing has become difficult to obtain for most business owners. For business owners facing this situation, it might appear that all is lost if their bank cannot help them. Instead, learning that your banker is not up to the task of providing short-term working capital should simply be the starting point for seeking new and effective sources that are capable of providing sound commercial mortgage help.

There are at least five significant factors underlying the current difficulty for business borrowers attempting to obtain short term financing. Three of the factors are discussed below, and all of the issues are related to recent commercial lending chaos seen nationwide. First, unsecured lines of business credit have all but disappeared for many businesses. This is occurring in many areas and in most cases is due primarily to a bank decision to eliminate this kind of business financing rather than the payment history of the business owner. In a typical situation, the bank reducing or eliminating a commercial line of credit will provide the business owner with a 30 to 90-day period to make new financing arrangements. Second, bank requests for more commercial financing collateral are now a frequent occurrence. Providing additional collateral in a depressed economy is not feasible for most businesses because there are likely to be reduced valuations for commercial property and many other business assets. Third, many regional and local banks have exited commercial lending. Whether they have publicly announced it or not, a significant number of banks operating nationally appear to have made a similar decision. Many small businesses have been impacted negatively by at least one of the factors noted above. Although any business owner who has been (or will be) victimized by what appears to be confusing and perhaps unfair lending practices might not agree, there are some positive developments which will help many businesses. Although commercial banks have largely abandoned their previous commercial finance programs, new business lending options are rapidly emerging to fill the large void left by banks no longer active in this field. The most promising of these are new and flexible approaches to short-term working capital loans. Seeking the counsel of a business finance expert who will offer a candid assessment of the realistic prospects for a business seeking short-term working capital financing is a prudent decision because confusion can result for even the most experienced business owner. Small business owners should seriously consider the more effective options for small business financing and working capital.

Recalled pet food found to contain rat poison

Friday, March 23, 2007

In a press release earlier today, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, along with Dean of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Donald F. Smith, confirmed that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified Aminopterin as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods.

Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

Aminopterin is a drug used in chemotherapy for its immunosuppressive properties and, in some areas outside the US, as a rat poison. Earlier reports stated that wheat gluten was a factor being investigated, and officials now state that the toxin would have come from Chinese wheat used in the pet food, where it is used for pest control. Investigators will not say that this is the only contaminant found in the recalled food, but knowing the identity of the toxin should assist veterinarians treating affected animals.

The Food Laboratory tested samples of cat food received from a toxicologist at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University. The samples were found to contain the rodenticide at levels of at least 40 parts per million.

Commissioner Hooker stated, “We are pleased that the expertise of our New York State Food Laboratory was able to contribute to identifying the agent that caused numerous illnesses and deaths in dogs and cats across the nation.”

The press release suggests Aminopterin, a derivative of folic acid, can cause cancer and birth defects in humans and can cause kidney damage in dogs and cats. Aminopterin is not permitted for use in the United States.

The New York State Food Laboratory is part of the Federal Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) and as such, is capable of running a number of unique poison/toxin tests on food, including the test that identified Aminopterin.

Blair ally Lord Levy arrested

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Police have arrested Lord Levy, chief fundraiser to the Labour Party and close associate of Tony Blair. Lord Levy was arrested by the Specialist Crime Directorate of London’s Metropolitan police as part of an on-going investigation into the cash-for-peerages row which has troubled the Labour government since the start of the year. He was bailed on Wednesday afternoon without charge pending further enquiries.

In a statement, Lord Levy said the arrest was “totally unnecessary”. A spokesman also said: “He has not been charged and does not expect to be, as he has committed no offence.”

The cash-for-peerages affair erupted earlier this year, after an independent body reported that Tony Blair had sold peerages (the title of Lord) to businessmen in exchange for secret donations to the Labour Party. This potentially breaks the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act of 1925 which was originally introduced after Prime Minister Lloyd George was caught selling peerages for personal funds.

The ruling Labour Party admitted soon after that it had borrowed over £14 million before the last general election in 2005. The opposition Conservative Party also admitted it had been loaned £16 million by wealthy businessmen. It’s believed that as chief fundraiser, Lord Levy arranged the Labour Party’s loans.

All political parties deny any wrong-doing, although the arrest of one of the Prime Minister’s closest allies is going to provide yet more scandal for the already troubled party.

Downing Street has so far declined to comment on what they call a “party matter” and Levy himself has accused the police of “over-reacting”. Some politicians have commented that the situation could be very serious for Mr. Blair.

Plastic Surgery Options Available To Get A More Contoured Figure

Plastic Surgery Options Available to Get a More Contoured Figure

by

Anna Woodward

After pregnancy and/or weight loss, you might think that you will never get your correct body shape back again. Pregnancy stretches out skin and muscles, and it leaves behind hard-to-reach pockets of fat. Weight loss leaves a large amount of extra skin that adds both girth and weight to your figure. Body contouring is a good option for this problem. There are a few options in plastic surgery for body contouring. You could consider liposuction, a tummy tuck, a breast lift, butt lift, or a combination of several treatments. If you are ready for a change, then one or a few of these options might be good for you.

The main point behind most of these treatments is to take away the excess fat using liposuction methods, contour the tissue underneath, tighten the muscle, take away excess skin, and then tighten the skin. Before considering a procedure like this, you should remember that plastic surgery is still a surgical procedure. Some people might take it very lightly since it is often for your appearance. Before you can have a surgery like this, it is important for you to be in good health. This means that you will need a medical exam, blood work, and you will need to give a full medical history.

Something else to consider before having plastic surgery is your choice of a surgeon. It might take some time, but it will be worth it to do some research in order to get someone that you can respect and trust. There are definitely some doctors out there that are more likeable than others. Some tend to be negative, and this makes it difficult to feel good about having them do a procedure on you.

The free consultations that are often advertised for various services is an important consideration as you are looking for a plastic surgeon. That short meeting can give you insight into the surgeries that you are considering as well as into the surgeon himself or herself. Take the time to consult with a few different surgeons. Make sure that they are easy to talk to, have a friendly staff, and are willing to work with you financially.

After speaking to a few different surgeons, you should have a fairly good idea of which procedure would be something you would like to consider. Of course, your medical testing needs to be clean, but once that is taken care of, you should be free to consider having one or more of these body contouring procedures.

If you have never considered plastic surgery to help you have a smoother figure, it would not hurt to look into it. There are many surgeons that would be willing to discuss your options.

G20 Summit plans to inject US$5tn into economy before 2011

Friday, April 3, 2009

The G20 Summit held in London, England concluded Thursday with an injection into the economy of US$5 trillion by the end of 2010.

Global trade would be supported by $250 billion (169.5 billion pounds). “We are going to act decisively to kickstart international trade. We will ensure availability of at least $250 billion over the next two years,” said Gordon Brown Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The International Monetary Fund IMF will have access to $750bn in resources of which $250bn will support special drawing rights.

Developing countries received $100bn which will be dispensed via Multilateral development banks. Towards this end, the IMF will sell off gold reserves.

China will support the IMF fund by $40bn, the European Union by $100bn, and Japan by $100bn.

There will be increased regulation on banking and credit ratings agencies. There was a commitment to clamp down on hedge funds, tax havens and toxic assets. To restore consumer confidence in the financial sector, a new Financial Stability Board will be initiated internationally. There would be new policies implemented to control pay and bonuses paid to the heads of banks and corporations.

The G20 leaders were adverse to protectionism and rallied to support international trade and investment.

The Leaders’ statement said, “We reaffirm the commitment made in Washington: to refrain from raising new barriers to investment or to trade in goods and services, imposing new export restrictions, or implementing World Trade Organization (WTO) inconsistent measures to stimulate exports.”

Eoin O’Malley, senior adviser on international trade at BusinessEurope, said “The measure also needs to be part of wider package to avoid protectionism and conclude the Doha round which will stimulate trade growth. The key point now is to move forward with Doha. The key now is implementation. G20 governments must act quickly to provide this finance to companies that need it urgently.”

Glasgow cannabis enthusiasts celebrate ‘green’ on city green

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

Benefits Of Becoming An Accounting Clerk

By Sean Goudelocks

There are a number of benefits of becoming an accounting clerk whether at a small company or a large corporation. One of the main benefits is being able to learn accounting without having to pursue a four year degree. Another major benefit is being able to have practical knowledge of accounting which is extremely important to many employers. There are many additional benefits that can allow individuals to reap serious rewards for having a minimum amount of qualifications. If you want to know more about this topic, you can read the tips and guide below.

One of the best perks to becoming a clerk for the accounting department at any major company is the pay. High school graduates with a decent educational record and limited to no experience can make between $28,000 to $32,000 a year. This rate of pay can increase after individuals have additional training or if individuals have obtained an undergraduate degree. The pay scale often increases for individuals who have been at the company for a long period of time. The longer an individual works with one organization, the more likely they are to see their salary increase.

Another excellent perk for accounting clerks is continuing education. Many employers are willing to pay for their employees to attend further education in their field. Clerks are often able to take classes at night or online with the cost being reimbursed to them by their employer. This can mean a large cost savings for employees who are looking to go to business school. Best of all, many employers do not make employees continue to work with them after they take these classes. Employees are free to continue with the same company or they may peruse a position elsewhere.

Clerks also work with some very influential people in powerful companies. Whether a clerk is working for the accounts receivable department of the FedEx corporation or the clerk is working with the payroll department of Bank of America, Fortune 500 companies hire hundreds or thousands of clerks to assist with their day to day needs. Many executives like to visit these departments to create a positive public image. This can help many new clerks who are beginning at a company to network as well as learn more about the industry they work in. Clerks often are able to move up the ladder quickly as long as they understand the basics of the industry that they work in.

Accounting clerks are one of the few entry level jobs that can be made into a very profitable career. While many high school graduates hear that they have to go to college in order to be successful, clerks are able to prove them wrong. This position is available for students as soon as they graduate from high school and can generate a decent living. However, employees also qualify for some unique privileges such as tuition reimbursement and other perks such as health insurance and retirement savings plans. Best of all, there is room for advancement within the company for employees!
