Stop Smoking Pills Might Be Exactly What You Need

By Rory Herts

Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths. As a matter of fact, it causes one out of five deaths in the United States each year. Around 1,200 Americans die because of smoking everyday. Aside from the scare that people get from these mind-blowing figures, a lot of smokers would like to quit in order to look better. Cigarette smoking does have adverse effects such as premature aging, tooth decay, and hair loss. Some people would also like to have a better fitness level.

Whatever the reason is for quitting, there are now many support systems available in the market that can help a person to quit smoking. One of them is the stop smoking pill that is available in the market.

The New Stop Smoking Pill in The Market

Last May, a new stop smoking pill was approved by the Food and Drug Administration or FDA. This is the second nicotine-free quit smoking pill that has gained federal approval, adding to the limited pool of effective drugs for smoking cessation.

Varenicline was shown to help more than one out of five smokers to stop smoking after using it for a year. This stop smoking pill inhibits the feelings of pleasure that smokers feel when they light up a cigarette as well as the withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting. This product will now be available to the public under the brand name, Chantix. This new stop smoking pill should be taken twice a day for a minimum of twelve weeks in order to be able to quit smoking.

The First Nicotine-Free Stop Smoking Pill

The first stop smoking pill that was approved by the FDA in 1997 is Zyban, the brand name for a sustained-released tablet form of bupropion hydrochloride. Bupropion hydrochloride is the same drug that is used as an anti-depressant. This is sold under the name of Wellbutrin SR.

By boosting the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the body and inducing the same feelings that are brought about by the flow of nicotine in the body, this stop smoking pill can take away the need for a cigarette. Because this product can give a person a sense of energy and well-being, it’s very effective in reducing withdrawal symptoms and weaning people out of their nicotine addiction.

This stop smoking pill only works after the person has taken it for a week and has accumulated a sufficient amount of the drug in his body. It should be taken twice a day for a week before a person stops smoking. Most smokers tend to take this pill ten to twelve weeks longer in order to fully give up smoking.

Although the pills that are mentioned above are great for people who want to stop smoking, they should not be taken by women who are pregnant and breast-feeding. They can also be bad for people with a history of eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia. For these reasons, these stop smoking pills should only be taken with a doctor’s prescription.

U.S. military confirms Qur’ans were kicked, stepped on and splashed with urine at Guantanamo

Saturday, June 4, 2005

On Friday, the U.S. military released the results of their investigation and confirmed that in 5 separate incidents, American guards at the Guantánamo Bay prison “mishandled” the Islamic holy book. However, they stress that guards were usually “respectful” of the Qur’an.

One incident involved splashing a Qur’an with urine by urinating near an air vent while others involved kicking, stepping on and writing in Qur’ans.

Brigadier-General Jay Hood, the commander of the jail, said that these incidents are the exception to the rule. In a statement issued late Friday, he said: “The inquiry … revealed a consistent, documented policy of respectful handling of the Qur’an dating back almost two-and-a-half years.”

Gen. Hood looked into the allegations, published and then retracted by Newsweek, that American personnel flushed a Qur’an down a toilet. He said that the inquiry did not find any evidence supporting this particular allegation. “The inquiry found no credible evidence that a member of the Joint Task Force at Guantanamo Bay ever flushed a Qur’an down a toilet. This matter is considered closed.”

The incidents reported are:

 • a guard kicking a prisoner’s Qur’an;
 • Qur’ans wetted by water balloons thrown by guards;
 • a “two-word obscenity” written, in English, inside the cover of a Qur’an. Military officials state that it is equally possible that a guard wrote this in the prisoner’s Qur’an or that the prisoner wrote this in his own Qur’an;
 • a guard who urinated too close to an air vent, spraying a Qur’an with urine;
 • an interrogator who stepped on a Qur’an during an interrogation.

The investigation also revealed 15 alleged cases of Qur’an mistreatment by detainees themselves. Detainees used Qur’ans as pillows, urinated on them, and, several times, tore pages out of copies of the books, according to the report. For example, the report states that a guard observed a “detainee place two Qur’ans in his toilet and state he no longer cared about the Qur’an or his religion,” on February 23, 2004. It is believed that such behavior is intended to cause disruption and problems for the guards.

New Jersey governor calls television show “Jersey Shore” negative

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Chris Christie, governor of the US state of New Jersey, complained on ABC’s Sunday morning talk show This Week that TV series Jersey Shore promotes a negative image of the state.

Prompted by a feature in The New York Times on Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, one of the stars of the MTV show, interviewer Jake Tapper asked the governor whether he thought the series was positive or negative for the state. Christie unequivocally answered that the show was “negative for New Jersey… It takes a bunch of New Yorkers, drops them on the Jersey Shore, and tries to make America feel like this is New Jersey”. He concluded, “I can tell people: they want to know what New Jersey really is? I welcome them to come to New Jersey any time.”

In a wide-ranging interview the governor also faced questions about local and national politics, including New Jersey’s US$11 billion budget deficit. Specifically, he was challenged over his plans to not pay $3 billion into public pension funds, payments described by the interviewer as a “legal obligation”. He said that he “wasn’t going to put $3 billion into a failing pension system” and that there would be further reforms of pensions and health benefits.

Christie was further questioned over his ongoing conflicts with teachers unions. He responded that “we can’t have one sector of our society sheltered from the ravages of the recession, at the cost to people who have been hurt by the recession the most”, citing the example of construction unions in New Jersey currently suffering unemployment between 35 and 50%.

Comply With Government Laws By Using Paper Shredding Services

By Adrianna Noton

Businesses and individuals face a greater than ever threat of identity theft, corporate espionage, and fraud. Every enterprise no matter the size keeps sensitive papers at their location that will have to be disposed of safely and securely. Businesses collect a broad range of information about employees, clients, customers, finances, budgets, and product development. These are sensitive documents that could be used illegally if stolen so it is vital to have a method in place regarding secure disposal of the documents.

Governments understand the importance of protecting confidential information, and have passed legislation to ensure the security of sensitive information in order to protect businesses and consumers. Records security management has become an important task for every business. Paper shredding services or document destruction companies can provide your business with secure records management protocols, give advice on a schedule of maintenance, and make certain that your company is in compliance with up to date government regulations. Paper shredding companies provide a vital method of security regarding the information a company disposes of, and ensure sensitive information remains confidential.

Paper shredding services is the most efficient solution to destruction of sensitive documents. These documents include payroll info, health insurance records, budget and sales. Business strategic planning, product specs, vendor info, inventory lists, transaction records, etc. Paper shredding experts provide the support that a company’s needs to ensure their private papers are secure. They assist in up a retention schedule, and provide off-site and on-site document destruction services. Prior to the scheduled shredding day, a secure bin is provided to place the papers to be shredded. A secure shredder truck with an industrial shredder comes to the business location. The bins of papers are collected and shredded in the shredder that is on the back of the truck. A Certificate of Document Destruction is given to the business stating the date of destruction of the sensitive material. This is added liability protection against identity theft or compliance with government regulations.

Many companies believe that recycling their sensitive paper documents is adequate since recycling does not meet regulations concerning confidentiality and consumer protection. A paper shredding company ensures documents are completely protected throughout the process and will recycle the shredded remains which will help protect the environment and the business in terms of regulatory mandates.

The benefit of using a professional Seattle paper shredding service is not just secure shredding but also staff will be able focus their time and effort on other important tasks. A professional paper shredding service removes the burden of maintaining and servicing an in-house shredder. As well, using office shredders is a very time consuming task as one has to stand there feeding the shredder paper by paper. Also, office shredding is not secure as there is a possibility of security breach while documents stack up waiting to be shredded. Seattle paper shredding services is a practical, cost-efficient, and secure solution. When an enterprise hires a Seattle paper shredding service, they will comply with government laws and they will have peace of mind knowing their confidential waste will not end up in the hands of criminals.

Emaar Properties claims Burj Dubai as world’s tallest building

Sunday, July 22, 2007

United Arab Emirates (UAE) developer Emaar Properties has claimed that their Burj Dubai commercial and residential tower, currently under construction, has become the world’s tallest building, reaching a height of 512.1 metres (or 1,680 feet) and 141 storeys.

The current official record holder, Taipei 101 of Taiwan, has a height of 508 metres and 101 storeys, and will retain the “tallest building” title for some time to come. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat sets the criteria for achieving height records for buildings, and will not evaluate the Burj Dubai until construction is complete in late 2008. Although final height details have been kept secret by the developer, the Burj Dubai is expected to reach nearly 700 metres in height, with approximately 160 storeys.

The current record holder for the world’s tallest free-standing structure is the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada. It has a height of 553 metres. The Burj Dubai, therefore, would claim both records when it is completed.

Once the Burj Dubai is completed, it will have required 330,000 cubic metres of concrete, 39,000 tonnes of steel and 142,000 square metres of glass, according to Emaar Properties. The building will have 56 lifts (elevators) that can move at a rate of speed of 1.75 to 10 metres per second.

Dubai is undergoing a construction boom currently with the Burj Dubai as the planned centrepiece of a $US20 billion project, which will eventually realize some 30,000 apartments and boast the world’s largest shopping mall.

There have been criticisms of the working conditions for construction workers in the UAE. A majority of the estimated 500,000 construction workers in the UAE are foreign workers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

In a 2006 report on the UAE’s treatment of migrant workers, entitled Building Towers, Cheating Workers, Human Rights Watch documented abuses in UAE such as, “extremely low wages, several years of indebtedness to recruitment agencies for fees that UAE law says only employers should pay, the withholding of employees’ passports, and hazardous working conditions that result in apparently high rates of death and injury.”

In October of last year, Human Rights Watch delivered specific recommendations to the UAE government for improvement of working conditions. The UAE government acted swiftly on the report and put in place several improvements, which were applauded by Human Rights Watch.

However, the salaries of migrant construction workers remain in the range from $106 to $250 per month, while the national average wage is over $2,000 per month. Trade unions remain illegal in the UAE.

Hazing It’s All Fun And Games Until Somebody Dies

Hazing – It’s All Fun And Games Until Somebody Dies

by

Amanda J Greene

Hazing has been an element of sororities and fraternities forever. What used to be harmless fun and minimal humiliation has been stretched to a point of extreme, life threatening incidents, that can not only be harmful to those pledging but can result in criminal charges and jail sentences for those imposing these customs.

Even movies display hazing but do they show the true story? We are talking about places where pledges are asked to do more than streak, wear something disparaging on their forehead, or even scrub the bathroom floor with a toothbrush in the middle of the night. Hazing rituals at most colleges have been taken to new tiers and, of late, many states and colleges have banned these rituals all together to ensure that they don’t heighten from smaller pranks to bigger and more dangerous events. A few of the rituals have not only caused many mental anguish but physical harm. And some more extreme incidents that resulted in death have seen issues such as paddling, boiling hot water on specific body parts, and being forced to ingest stuffs that can cause choking or excessive intake of water or alcohol which can be deadly. And these are only the items that may cause a person physical damage. Rituals which include public humiliation, rape, and public masturbation are also ways in which a fraternity or sorority screens out those that may be weak and for many watching the pledges be humiliated is a real turn on. Some even compel their pledges to perform sex acts on those already in the residence. So why would anyone do these things and humiliate themselves or risk their lives just to get into a fraternity or sorority? Well, college can be a very lonely place and college dorm rooms are not really pleasant places to be. Those who can get in a sisterhood or brotherhood at the college they are attending are part of an elite group and are included in a family of sorts with people to take care of them and look out for them throughout their college career. It is a level of esteem that most college students aspire to and only a few can attain. And these dangerous and embarrassing rituals and antics for many seem like a small price to pay for this level of social status and a place of belonging that many were unable to attain during their high school career.

If your kid is starting to college very soon you will be needing some residence hall linens for their room. A fantastic site to assist with your quest for dorm room bedding is

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Friday, March 10, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council of Buffalo voted on Tuesday to send the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal “to committee for further discussion”, after citing the need for more public involvement.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a development proposal by the Savarino Construction Services Corporation, a project designed by the architect Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group. The hotel would be placed on the southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo.

To make way for the project, at least five buildings located at 1109 to 1121 Elmwood Ave would be demolished. At least two properties on Forest Avenue could also be demolished. The Elmwood properties, according to Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarion Construction, are “under contract”, but it is unclear if Savarino Construction actually owns the Elmwood properties. Hans Mobius, a former mayorial candidate, is still believed to be the current owner the properties. Mobius also owns 607 Forest Avenue.

The properties 605 and 607 Forest Avenue could also be included in the proposal according to Hassett.

“We would use a Special Development Plan to rezone 1119-1121 Elmwood and 605 Forest to a C-2 zoning category,” stated Hassett. It is possible that Savarino Construction may try to obtain a variance for 605 Forest, which would allow them to enforce eminent domain, should the hotel be allowed to go forward.

The building at 607 Forest was also discussed to be rezoned, but it is unclear what the plans would be for that property. During the February 28 Common Council meeting, Hassett stated that the properties 605 and 607 were “now off the agenda”.

Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood, owns the property at 605 Forest and attended Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.

“Having a hotel is a bright idea. We all love the idea of a hotel, but the way that it is presented, is wishful thinking. This hotel does not fit. It’s like putting two gallons of water in a gallon jug, it does not fit. At the last meeting, the architect admitted that they are planning to put the undergound parking lot and the hotel, right at the property line. If I open my window, I will be able to touch the wall, that goes fifty feet high”, said Georgiadis.

“There is a problem having a seventy-two room hotel and fifty-five parking spaces. That means that all the other cars will spill all over the neighborhood. The footprint is simply too small. If you have a bigger [parking] lot, and a smaller hotel, I will welcome a hotel. I have a parking lot at my own business, and I am chasing people all day long. Remember, the city says it has ‘zero tolerance [for illegal parking]’. Try telling that to the guy from Albany who came to see his kids, that are going to Buffalo State, who would get tickets totaling over a hundred dollars”, added Georgiadis.

The city’s Planning Board is scheduled to meet on March 14, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. about the proposal. Although a discussion will take place, no vote is expected to be taken.

At the moment, none of the properties are zoned for a hotel. Savarino Construction plans on asking for a C2 zoning permit. If that does not work, they plan to implement a new zoning plan called a “special development plan” which would allow for only a hotel on the site. That zone would not be able to be changed.

“This [project] justifies Mobius’s refusal to invest in any maitenance[sic] or improvements”, on the properties said Clarence Carnahan, a local resident. “Where were the Council persons over the years? Where were the city inspectors over the years, to make sure that he maintained and improved his properties? The government was supposed to be protecting, not being preditorial. I see a predatorial issue here when it comes to this hotel. Over the years: Why has the local government been disfunctional when it came to Mobius’s properties? Refusal to invest in improvements, doesn’t that sound like a slumlord? Maybe I am missing a point here, but what kind of messages does this send to other slumlords that havn’t[sic] been jailed or fined? It’s [the hotel] trying to be pushed through.”

Carnahan also presented signs for residents and or business owners who are opposed to the hotel, that could be placed in windows or on stakes in the yard. Some of the signs said, ‘No tell hotel’, ‘Hans off, no hotel’, ‘It takes more than a hotel to make a village’. and ‘Keep Elmwood free, no hotel’. Carnahan plans on making more signs for a protest to be held on Saturday March 18, at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Elmwood and Forest. Some signs were given to individuals after the meeting.

“First things first, Hans is the problem, and I don’t think it has been addressed. Let’s roll back the clock on this project. What can we do with Hans? There is such thing as eminent domain, which could be of greater interest to the community, to seize the property at its lowest assessed value”, said Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris at 1119 Elmwood. “There are so many ideas that have not been explored and we are about to give this parcel away, to a big developer.”

Mobius has not returned any calls by Wikinews regarding the situation.

A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained a letter, exclusively, addressed to one of the five business owners from Hans Mobius stating:

There is a proposal to develop my property which you are currently renting. Because of opposition to this development, it does not look like it will happen. I will let you know if there any changes.

Despite the letter, there have been no plans or decisions made to end the proposal.

To date, none of the business owners or residents of 1119-1121 Elmwood have received an eviction notice.

Business owners and residents gave an indication of what they would like to see happen at the corner; a project similar to one done locally last year. There, developers renovated two buildings on Auburn and Elmwood Avenues, merging the buildings into one thus allowing for more shop space. Among some of the shops to move in after the development were Cone Five Pottery, The Ruby Slipper, and Abraham’s Jewelers. Prior to the renovation work, the left building in the picture was boarded up for several years. Many of the concerned locals would like to see a similar development on Forest and Elmwood.

Rocco Termini, a developer in Buffalo, proposed a similar design at the February 28 community meeting

In an interview after the February 28 meeting, Termini stated, “I will be willing to take a look at this myself, or I would be more than happy to be partners with Sam, Sam Savarino”, who is President and Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Construction Services Corp.

So far Savarino Construction has no plans to team up with Termini.

How the Army Corps of Engineers closed one New Orleans breach

Friday, September 9, 2005

New Orleans, Louisiana —After Category 4 storm Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, on the night before August 29, 2005, several flood control constructions failed. Much of the city flooded through the openings. One of these was the flood wall forming one side of the 17th Street Canal, near Lake Pontchartrain. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is the primary agency for engineering support during such emergencies. A USACE team was assessing the situation in New Orleans on the 29th, water flow was stopped September 2nd, and the breach was closed on September 5th.
